The one-to-one iPad project has really made some significant changes to how our Flipped Classroom works!  Group white board apps like Baiboard and file sharing apps like Showbie have had us rethink our process.

We use Baiboard to collaboratively brainstorm when we run into challenging questions or want to extend our thinking beyond the classroom.  It allows me to join a group discussion or check in to see what they are working on with intruding on their thought process.

We are running our Journals (exit cards) through Showbie to eliminate the need for photocopying and improve our overall communication.

Just discovered this web application: eduCanon.com From the website: What is eduCanon? eduCanon is an online learning environment to create and share interactive video lessons. Teachers begin with any YouTube, Vimeo, or TeacherTube video content (screencasts, Khan Academy, Minute Physics, TED, NOVA, etc.) and transform what is traditionally passive content into an active experience for students. By time-linking activities that students engage with as the video progresses the content is segmented into digestible components - increasing student engagement and, through our real-time monitoring, informing the next day’s lesson planning. I've experimented with this with my SNC2D class by using a Ted Ed talk on stem cells and embedding 9 multiple choice questions. The majority of students said they preferred this method in my flipped classroom over simply watching my tutorial lessons. They reported that they could exit the video and when they returned, it picked up where they left off and saved their previous answers to the questions. I like that I can see who has watched the video and how they did on the questions. I can identify the terms or concepts that I need to spend time on in class with them. I think I will continue to post my videos on eduCanon for next year. Now, to build the questions in.....summer work! Jen Ross Holton, CHSS

Great website for embedding quizzes in your video!

A colleague shared the following with me:

You can put your videos on it and embed multiple choice questions throughout the video. The website marks it for you and posts the students results. You can also see which questions had the lowest overall scores for finding misconceptions etc.

For people just starting the process this may be a great tool!

New format for 1P and 2P classes

We have had great success with academic, university and college streams using the flipped classroom.  Our struggles continue to be in the 1P and 2P classrooms.  Our new model for the 1P and 2P classroom is as follows:

• ALL students will watch the video at the same time on iPads (to be determined by the teacher) and take the note with the teacher circulating to ensure staying on task and completing the note.  (For students who are motivated and are working ahead they will be participating in this exercise but may be on a future note.)
• ALL students then will work on assigned work or journals from either the current lesson or the previous lesson they were attempting to complete.

Rationale:  We were providing too much freedom and latitude in our previous model to a group of students who have not ALL matured to a point where they can self-regulate.  Students were not watching all the videos prior to assessments nor were they using "video" time effectively.  Our new model will hopefully build on their self-moderation skills as well as encourage students to progress at a proper rate.
